QPR is a nationally known suicide prevention program built and based on best practices. As a certified QPR trainer, Kim can facilitate this presentation for either teenagers or adults. This is a perfect program for schools, agencies and community organizations.
It is essential that we train our youth on the signs of various types of mental illness, signs of suicide ideation, and how to get help and/or help someone who is struggling. Kim’s saying is ‘we have to normalize the conversation, not the act itself’ when talking about suicide prevention. Students want to talk about these challenges, and this workshop allows them to do so in a safe and comfortable environment.
Seeing the need to teach young people to intervene while keeping themselves safe, Kim educated herself on Bystander Intervention and began to facilitate assemblies on this topic for teenagers. This training focuses on educating the participants on the 5 Ds of intervention (distract, direct, delegate, delay, document), while using solid examples of how to utilize these skills to assist someone who may be in a situation where harm could be brought upon them.
During her tenure at GCIT, Kim was tasked with creating and offering many small and large group presentations including the annual Freshmen Meet and Greet. The activities offered showcase the commonalities in all of us, hence participants typically come out of the training with a higher level of comfort, reduced anxiety and an increased sense of belonging.
School staff have been specifically requesting this training. It includes relevant information about current mental health challenges in youth, trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This program can be geared toward staff from upper or younger grade levels.
